Big Carp in France – Domaine de Goncourt

For carp anglers planning a trip to France, Domaine de Goncourt is a name that stands out. With over three decades of history, beautifully matured lakes, and carp that now grow beyond 70lb, it’s regarded as one of the finest carp fishing destinations in Europe.

From Industry to Angling Paradise

The story of Goncourt began not with fishing, but with gravel extraction in the region between Châlons-en-Champagne and Saint-Dizier. When the work ended, a series of pits remained. These filled naturally with clean underground water and were left untouched, slowly transforming into rich aquatic environments.

Years later, small carp were introduced. Left to grow in these nutrient-filled waters, they developed into the strong, large fish that anglers travel across Europe to catch today.

A Venue That Grew With Its Fish

At first, the lakes were used mainly by local anglers on a day-ticket basis. As the carp began to reach specimen size, news spread quickly. Before long, anglers from the UK, Belgium, and the Netherlands were making the journey to experience Goncourt for themselves. Its reputation grew rapidly, and it soon became established as a go-to venue for those seeking big carp in France.

A Family With Carp at Heart

The modern chapter of Domaine de Goncourt began when Pascale Briallart took on the complex more than a decade ago. Her dedication, personal touch, and genuine love for carp fishing shaped the venue into something special.

She was later joined by her son, Maxime, a former French carp angling champion, and Phil Timmings - Together they have created a balance of warm hospitality and angling expertise, ensuring the lakes continue to evolve to suit the expectations of today’s carp anglers.

Mature Lakes, Serious Carp

Now aged between 20 and 30 years, the lakes are well-established, with natural features, clean water, and an impressive stock of carp. Many of the original fish now exceed 70lb, and regular additional stockings have kept the fishing varied and exciting.

JB Lake – Non-Stop Action

JB Lake opened to visitors in 2018 and quickly earned a reputation as the most productive water on the complex. Early sessions saw anglers landing 80–120 carp in a single week, with fish now growing past 55lb. Beds of particle bait with a scattering of boilies have proven especially effective, making JB a lake where sleepless nights are part of the experience.

Folly Lake – The Untouched Jewel

Brand new for 2024, Folly Lake is unlike anything else on the complex. Over 30 years old yet never fished, it has already revealed carp to the mid-50s and promises even more surprises. The water is crystal clear and up to 4 metres deep, offering the magical experience of watching carp glide along the margins. Folly feels like stepping into a hidden world – peaceful, natural, and full of mystery.

Ten Lakes, Something for Everyone

Today, Domaine de Goncourt offers a choice of ten different lakes, each with its own identity:

Some are perfect for chasing that once-in-a-lifetime carp, while others provide consistent action. With such variety, anglers of all levels can find a lake that suits their style.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

One of the most telling signs of Goncourt’s quality is its loyal following. More than 80% of anglers return year after year, with many rebooking the same lake while also trying others on future trips. The combination of excellent fishing, great facilities, and the welcoming team ensures every visit feels memorable.

Big Carp and Lasting Memories

From its beginnings as a collection of gravel pits to its status today as one of the most respected names in French carp fishing, Domaine de Goncourt has come a long way.

Whether you’re chasing a new personal best, looking for a week of non-stop action, or simply want to experience the peace and beauty of a mature French lake, Goncourt has something for you. It’s a venue built on passion, shaped by history, and loved by anglers from across Europe.
